Life on the fast track

Came back at 3.30am, decided to take a shower, then blog about my past few days. Nope I have NOT been clubbing, do I look like the type? Had a very long night; met up with a few MPYO friends for dinner at Dome, KLCC before watching Joshua Bell perform with MPO. After that, rushed off to Top Room to catch Chern Hwei's gig there. For those of you who don't already know, he's a young, brilliant violinist currently based in New York but back here to play in the HSBC Classics festival. This guy plays everything from classical music to jazz and indian ragas! A very nice, sociable person too, easy to get along with. Anyway, his show ended around 1.30am, so we decided to go mamak-ing. Had a hilarious, crazy time, reminiscent of supper at Ah Meng after youth on Saturdays.

How is KL? Funnily enough, I've gotten quite used to the pace of life here, which is much faster than Kuching. I don't feel homesick either, and have settled in quite comfortably at my apartment here. There's just three of us, one in each room, and we've got TV, wireless internet, washing machine, fridge, heater, sofa set, well-equipped kitchen; in short many things which most college students wouldn't even dream of. ICOM is about 10 minutes walk from here, and the nearest LRT station 20 minutes. Not too bad, considering the fact that many of my friends are studying at colleges in the middle of nowhere.

Had a really really super AWESOME jam session at Top Room last Sunday. There were many more jazz cats around that day thanks to the Jazz Association of Malaysia (JAM; cool acronym!) inaugural meeting being held there. Jammed with a few young cats slightly older than me, and surprise surprise, found out that they were all my seniors at ICOM. Now I'm getting excited. So they still are some jazzers left at ICOM, I was expecting a whole bunch of wannabe-rockers for company when I got in. The idea of us forming a band based on the level of playing we reached that day is very tantalizing.

Have been learning a lot and making many new friends, gotten to know people like Julian, David Gomes and Chern Hwei better, and expand my list of contacts at the same time. God willing I'll be gigging regularly in KL soon and making myself some extra pocket money. They were all very complimentary and gave me lots of encouragement, Chern Hwei even comparing my sound to Paquito D'Rivera, which my ego I find very complimentary. Thanks guys!

I'm gonna wrap things up for now, gotta catch some sleep as I've got another MPYO weekend rehearsal tomorrow (or technically, in a few hours' time). Now that I know my sister reads my blog, I'm so gonna get screwed when she tells my parents I've been having late, late nights.
