Only in Malaysia...

... can you predict the weather with Astro and Streamyx. No I do not mean switching to the weather channel. This interesting phenomenon is best described as follows:

1. The amount of rainfall is directly proportionate to the reception of your Astro decoder/quality of your internet connection.

This is most accurate over the weekends late at night or early in the morning (ie 11pm-2am). For example, if you are in the middle of watching Man Utd beating Arsenal and suddenly the picture on your TV screen goes choppy and blurry, chances are that:
1. The guys in charge of Astro are Arsenal supporters; or
2. It's going to rain/rain more heavily. (More likely)
On many occasions you will receive a "Services currently unavailable" message, which is usually confirmation of worsening weather.

In certain cases, your computer's inability to connect to the Internet (especially if you are using Streamyx) is also a good indicator of bad weather. Most of the times however a poor internet connection can be attributed to earthquakes, rats chewing on telephone wires, or Telekom Malaysia's inefficiency. The latter is the case 90% of the time. RM66 a month for unlimited access. Unfortunately, nowadays the word 'access' is very ope to interpretation.

Before I sign off, here's something that I saw on a t-shirt in KL - "Do not steal, the government hates competition." Replace 'government' with TM, Ah Longs, Chelsea etc and you have a phrase that suits every occasion.
